For those of you who are familiar with my story, I was diagnosed as being gluten intolerant in 2002 and have been on a gluten free diet since that time. I am personally familiar with the devastating effects that gluten sensitivity (or gluten intolerance) can have on your health.
Today, I am happy to see that Dr. Mehmet Oz has officially joined the gluten free diet bandwagon. He came out on his show today saying that he now recommends for people with unusual health problems to try a gluten free diet.
Dr. Oz: You Could Have Gluten Intolerance or Celiac Disease: MyFoxCHICAGO.com
In this preview for the show, he mentions that gluten intolerance is recognized as being different from Celiac Disease. He also talks about how it can be difficult to eliminate all gluten because it is disguised and added to so many product such as broths, soy sauce, flavorings and even lipstick!
Dr. Oz also mentions that many products labeled “gluten free” are not really good for you. They are loaded with the kinds of carbohydrates that work to keep you fat!
All this info is “old news” to MARI Method members. Since I personally experienced poor health for 30 years as a result of my gluten sensitivity being undiagnosed, I’m now passionate about helping others recognize how the potential dangers of eating gluten if your body reacts negatively to it. So, as part of the MARI Method, put my members on a gluten elimination diet.
I recommend that all my clients who are experiencing health issues try a 3 week gluten-free elimination diet. This is where you eliminate ALL grains for a period of 3 weeks, then slowly introduce, one at a time, to see if your symptoms return.
And, many MARI Method Members have reported back to me how bloating, migraine headaches, constipation, fibromyalgia and other symptoms have gone away after eliminating gluten from their diets. Note that this does NOT just mean wheat gluten, but it also includes gluten in other grains such as barley, oats, millet, corn, and sometimes, even rice.
So, if you spend a good deal of your time going to the doctor, trying to find out why you hurt, you could be suffering from gluten intolerance. This is true EVEN if you have been tested negative for Celiac Disease.
HOW TO DO A GLUTEN FREE ELIMINATION DIET:
For a period of 3 weeks (minimum), eliminate all grains from your diet. (Corn and rice are both grains!).
After 3 weeks, try re-introducing rice into your diet. If none of your symptoms return after 2 days, reintroduce another grain, again waiting 2 days.
If symptoms return, you have a sensitivity to gluten, and you should stay gluten free.During your gluten free elimination diet, read labels! If the product contains malto-dextrin, msg, caramel color, hydrolyzed protein, glutamates or any type of grain, do not eat it! Also, make sure that these items are not present in your vitamins or personal care products.
If you are gluten intolerant, take it seriously! Not only will you FEEL better, you’ll also prevent the onset of many auto-immune diseases that have been linked to gluten sensitivity.

Our doctors often tell us that if we do not have celiac disease, then there is no need to eliminate all gluten from our diet. However, gluten sensitivity affects about 10% of the population, it means that approximately 30 million people are gluten sensitive in America alone…but many of them don\’t even know it! I didn\’t find out until I was 30. I was extremely sick, had terrible headaches...and all from gluten! Nowadays, I try to look for gluten-free foods in our supermarket\’s specialty section. I try to cook at home as often as possible. And there is a great gluten-free restaurant, Hibiscus Café, where we go for special occasions.
Hi Kate – that’s exactly why I went undiagnosed for so many years! As more research is done in this area, don’t be surprised to see that number go up to more like 30-40% of the population, since many auto-immune and neurological diseases are now being linked to gluten intolerance.
Sounds like a great restaurant. It is nice to be able to go out on occasion and not wake up the next morning feeling like you’ve been hit by a truck!
